Why Kucherov, not McDavid, is my MVP

Connor McDavid is crazy good and Carey Price is the game's best goalie. But neither would get Scott Burnside's award vote. Here's why Nikita Kucherov and Ryan Suter deserve the hardware instead.

Now

Corey Pronman @coreypronman

Mild mystery why he fell so low. Not like Allsvenskan isn't scouted so well. OEL, H Lindholm, W Nylander all dominated and drafted high.

Corey Pronman @coreypronman

My thoughts on Pastrnak as a prospect aside (readers will know I liked him), every Swedish scout I talked to loved him as a draft prospect.

Check that: Did I say the Bruins' David Pastrnak scored his 17th goal of the season? Make that 18 now after his one-timer from the high slot beat Colorado goalie Calvin Pickard. Pastrnak is tied with Sidney Crosby for the league lead in goals with 18. Yes, you heard that right, Pastrnak is tied with Crosby. This kid is so dynamic and exciting to watch.

The Bruins' David Pastrnak comes out of the penalty box and scores for his 17th goal of the season. He's one goal behind the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby for the league lead. Here's how one Western Conference coach described Pastrnak: "Love him. Great offensive instincts. He's a natural goal scorer with great release. He gets his nose dirty and he's got a little bite to him. He's a perfect fit with [Brad] Marchand and [Patrice] Bergeron." Gotta give former Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli credit for drafted Pastrnak in the first round (No. 25th overall) in 2014.

When John Mitchell scores his first point of the season to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-0 lead over the Bruins, you know it's frustrating night for the Bruins. The Avalanche entered this game 0-4-1 in their last five and knew this game was an opportunity to take advantage of a Bruins team that plays on back-to-back nights. If this holds up for Colorado, it's a good base to build off moving forward against the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers.

Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon scored a shorthanded goal for a 2-0 lead over the Bruins. It was MacKinnon's seventh goal of the season. He has the ability to be an elite player in this league but this is the season he needs to elevate his game. The Avalanche need him to be that type of player in order for the team to have success.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly provided an update regarding the Vegas NHL expansion franchise getting its trademark declined. He said the decision was a surprise but still expects the Golden Knights to ultimately get registered. "Most importantly, from our perspective nothing changes," Daly said. "The franchise will go forward with that name and that logo. We have every expectation that we'll ultimately get that registration."

Joe McDonald ESPN Staff Writer

Matt Duchene has 10 goals this season, all on the road, for the Colorado Avalanche. Once he gets on a roll, goals should start to come in bunches. He's highly skilled and will go into traffic to score. He has great hands around the net and just proved it on that goal to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead over the Bruins. He can flat out fly and is an exciting player to watch. He's the type of player that will do anything for his teammates.

According to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, the NHL's Board of Governors made no decision today on Olympic participation in 2018. There was no formal vote. Bettman did say there was a strong negative sentiment among owners about going to the Olympics.

Bettman on how league would handle NHL players that play in Olympics regardless of NHL's participation: "We're not going to go there today."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance

Bettman on offering Olympic participation for CBA extension: "No demands were made. It was never like that. It was always in a discussion."

Bettman says cap range was given. Doesn't share specific number but says range goes from current cap to a couple million increase.
