The 49ers signed G Laken Tomlinson to a three-year contract extension that could keep him with the team through the 2021 season. The Niners acquired Tomlinson in a trade just before the 2017 season and he went on to start 15 games at left guard.

It was the 49ers defense that won the day in Wednesday's practice after winning most of the drills on Tuesday as well. In previous practices open to media, the offense had more than its share of success, especially in the red zone. That wasn't the case today as the defense kept the offense out of the end zone. It's an area QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been focused on improving after late-season struggles there.

The 49ers just wrapped up their veteran minicamp for 2018. Coach Kyle Shanahan will host the players and staff, their family members and friends at a team barbecue tomorrow before they part ways for the rest of the summer. The Niners are tentatively slated to open training camp on July 26.

The 49ers have signed third-round pick Fred Warner to his rookie contract. That leaves just first-rounder Mike McGlinchey and second-rounder Dante Pettis unsigned among the team's drafted rookie class.

49ers WR Marquise Goodwin won the George Halas Award from the Pro Football Writers of America on Wednesday. The award is given to the NFL player who best overcomes adversity to succeed. Goodwin dealt with the loss of his unborn son and his biological father but still managed to have his best NFL season in 2017. “On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to thank the PFWA for this prestigious award,” Goodwin said. “I am so grateful and thankful for all of the support given to us by my teammates, my coaching staff and the 49ers family that helped us get through some of the toughest times in our lives. I want all of the people out there that are struggling to remember that the reward lasts longer than the pain.”

49ers CB Richard Sherman did indeed go through individual drills during the team's Tuesday minicamp practice. He's still aiming to be full go at the start of training camp. It's excitement any time you get back on the field, you get to compete. "Getting back for training camp will be a lot of fun," Sherman said. "I'm sure I'll be excited for like the first three practices, like out of my mind and then I'll get back into the rhythm of understanding it's one practice at a time but it's been fun. Obviously I'm excited to get back. My body is feeling like it has before so I'm happy about that."

With Jimmie Ward (ankle) and Richard Sherman(Achilles) limited to individual work, the Niners continued to rotate with the first team at cornerback opposite Ahkello Witherspoon. Tyvis Powell and rookie Tarvarius Moore got most of the work. Powell had an interception against Jimmy Garoppolo in team drills.

49ers rookie WR Dante Pettis had his strongest day yet (at least in terms of practices open to media). While working with both the first and second units, Pettis made about five catches in team drills, including one deep ball from C.J. Beathard that nearly went for a touchdown.

49ers CB Richard Sherman on the continued changes with his former team in Seattle: "I honestly really don't pay attention to it," Sherman said. "It is what it is at this point. I think I'm going to focus on the team I'm on and what' we're trying to do and let the chips fall where they may out in Seattle. That's all I can do. They decided to let me go and pursue another team. Once they cut ties, I cut ties."

49ers CB Richard Sherman indicates all is still on track toward being ready for start of training camp. He will do some individual drills today and tomorrow, which was part of initial plan. He says he'll spend time away focused on staying in shape so he's ready to go for camp.
