GM Lynch: 49ers will cut Foster if LB is guilty

49ers general manager John Lynch stressed Monday that linebacker Rueben Foster won't remain on the team if "charges are proven true" that he assaulted his girlfriend earlier this month.

A strong argument could be made that the 49ers' greatest need on the roster is a top-level edge rusher. Because teams generally don't let those types of players hit the open market, they must be found in the draft. After NC State's Bradley Chubb, this isn't the year to do that, according to Mel Kiper Jr.: "The worst position in the draft is pass rushers, be it defensive end or be it outside linebacker," Kiper said. "It's just a terrible position... there's just not that defined first or second round pass rusher outside of Bradley Chubb and he's in a league of his own. Then you get to (Marcus) Davenport and then you get to (Harold) Landry and then I think (Uchenna) Nwosu would be there right with Landry. I think they're the best pass rushers and they may get bumped up a little bit because there's hardly anything at that position this year."

The number of 1pm ET (or earlier) games for west coast teams is a frequently a concern. This season, the Rams have 2, 49ers and Seahawks have 3, the Chargers have 4, and the Raiders have 5. As for Mountain time zone teams, the Cardinals and Broncos each have 4.

Whatever buzz was left from the 49ers' 5-0 finish to last season apparently made its way into the schedule-makers' HQ. The Niners have a whopping five prime-time games, including one on Thursday night (at home against the Raiders), two on Monday night (at Green Bay, vs. NYG) and two on Sunday night (vs. LAR, at SEA).

After hosting Georgia LB Roquan Smith on a pre-draft visit yesterday, the 49ers are scheduled to spend some time today with Virginia Tech LB Tremaine Edmunds today. Smith and Edmunds are widely regarded as the draft's two best inside linebacker prospects and real candidates for the Niners with the ninth pick in the draft. That's especially true with the uncertainty surrounding LB Reuben Foster. Smith is considered the better, more polished player while Edmunds brings more versatility and upside. Both would make sense for San Francisco in the first round.

The 49ers are hosting Georgia LB Roquan Smith on a pre-draft visit today. Smith posted a photo of his arrival at San Francisco International Airport on Monday night and NBC Sports Bay Area first confirmed the visit with the Niners. Smith is a legitimate candidate to be the team's pick at No. 9 in next week's draft. His athleticism and instincts have him ranked as one of the draft's five best players by both Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay. Even before Reuben Foster's legal issues, the Niners had interest in Smith. He figures to get a long look from the team no matter what, as he can play both middle and weak side linebacker in the Niners' scheme.

The 49ers gave LT Joe Staley a raise for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, ESPN's Field Yates reported, per league sources. Staley's base salary increased to $8.05 million in each season, up from $4.8 million. This move was expected, as coach Kyle Shanahan alluded to in February. "It's something that we are considering,” Shanahan said at the scouting combine. “We've got to see how this all plays out. I wish we could overpay everybody. I mean, these guys deserve it in my opinion. What they go through, what they put their bodies through, the pressure that they're under. But you also have to do what's right for the organization. You want to do what's right for all of your players.” The 49ers rewarded Staley for his continued strong performance at tackle and leadership in locker room.

Because of a federal injunction, the Santa Clara District Attorney's office announced Monday that the misdemeanor ammunition charge against 49ers LB Reuben Foster will be dismissed. Foster still faces three felony charges for domestic violence with an allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury, forcefully attempting to prevent a victim from reporting a crime and possession of an assault weapon.
