Tyler Lockett, a first-team All-Pro as a returner in 2015, said the NFL's new kickoff rules won't mean too many changes for him, but he likes that he'll have more room since the kickoff team won't be allowed to get a running start.

Pete Carroll said he was impressed with how rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin finished up the offseason program. Specifically, Carroll noticed how Griffin was able to cut it loose during minicamp, unlike earlier when he was trying to be perfect. The result: Griffin's speed "just jumped off the film."

Pete Carroll said after the Seahawks' final minicamp practice that there's still nothing new on the health statuses of SS Kam Chancellor or DL Malik McDowell. The other players who have missed time during offseason work because of injuries are expected to be ready for training camp, Carroll said. That group includes WR Brandon Marshall (ankle/toe/hamstring), DE Dion Jordan (knee), OT George Fant (knee) and SS Maurice Alexander (shoulder).

Brandon Marshall, who's recovering from surgeries on his ankle and toe, didn't do much in any of the Seahawks' three minicamp practices. Pete Carroll said he's also recovering from a hamstring injury and the team wanted to make sure he didn't suffer a setback. Said Carroll: "We talked about it today. He's got a solid six weeks. He'll be well. We need to do a really good job of making sure as we introduce him back into our tempo and speed and all that that we don't overdo it early in the excitement to see what he can do and all. He brings a real savvy and experience that we're anxious to see how it fits. It's gonna be another guy into the competition that brings some uniqueness to us. Very big statured kid. Different than some of the other guys. He's like Tanner [McEvoy]. So we'll see how that fits."

Pete Carroll was asked after the Seahawks' final minicamp practice if he's heard anything more from safety Earl Thomas, who's holding out. "No, we've been kinda mired in camp. Haven't heard anything yet," he said. Does Carroll expect to have any communication with Thomas before training camp? "Our guys are working, yeah. We're at work, so they're busy," he said.

A few notes/observations from the Seahawks' second minicamp practice: Brandon Marshall still isn't doing much as he rehabs his toe and ankle injuries; Keenan Reynolds has gotten more reps with Doug Baldwin resting, and he's caught nearly everything thrown his way -- as has another young receiver, Damore'ea Stringfellow; Chris Carson is still working ahead of first-round pick Rashaad Penny and continues to be the most impressive-looking running back. He made a sweet jump cut to break into the open field during and 11-on-11 period.

K.J. Wright on Earl Thomas holding out: "I understand why he's not here. However, I wish he was here just getting better with everybody else."

Bradley McDougald will be starting for the Seahawks at one safety spot or the other in 2018, perhaps depending on Earl Thomas' status. He said of Thomas holding out: "I feel like he deserves whatever he's asking for. He's a great player, but we just try not to let that distraction take anything away from the guys that's out here working every day."

K.J. Wright was asked about outside expectations not being as high for the Seahawks this year because of all the key players no longer there. He raised his eyebrow and noted they're only that — outside expectations.

Pete Carroll said cornerback Dontae Johnson recently suffered a foot injury that required surgery. Johnson, a former 49ers starter, signed a one-year deal with Seattle this offseason. Said Carroll: "He broke a bone in his foot about 10 days ago, so he's in a boot and recovering. Had a little surgery to get that fixed up."

Seahawks long for Thomas, but move on at camp

With Earl Thomas holding out, the Seahawks continued to rotate Delano Hill and Tedric Thompson in alongside Bradley McDougald as the first-team safeties.

Pete Carroll gave the standard response when asked about Earl Thomas skipping the Seahawks' mandatory minicamp: "I wish he was here. That would be nice. But we're focusing on the guys that are here, so we'll see how that goes."

The Seahawks are moving Shaquill Griffin from right cornerback to the left side, which is Richard Sherman's former spot. Griffin said Sherman taught him "how to be a professional" as a rookie last season and that the two still keep in contact now that Sherman is in San Francisco.

Pete Carroll was asked which Seahawk impressed him the most in terms of the shape he returned in from the offseason. The first of several names he mentioned was Chris Carson. The second-year running back said he gained 10 pounds to get up to 226, thanks to fewer hot wings — one of his favorite foods — and more protein shakes. He's back to full speed after an ankle/leg injury cut his rookie season short after he won the starting job out of training camp.
