Raiders' Gruden: Carr 'trying too hard' at times

Raiders coach Jon Gruden said quarterback Derek Carr might have been "too aggressive" in throwing a jump ball to Martavis Bryant on first-and-10 at the Dolphins' 13-yard line Sunday, a play that resulted in a "painful" fourth-quarter interception.

Jon Gruden, who was not asked specifically about Khalil Mack today: “It's hard to trade one of your best players, one of the best players in the franchise. It's hard. It's hard on the players. We didn't get anything for him that's going to help us this year. Justin Ellis hasn't played. We've got a lot of guys on the defensive line that are out. We have had to replace basically the entire secondary, some of the linebackers. We are in the process of putting the pieces back together. That will be exciting.” As ESPN Analytics wrote, Mack has 15 pressures this season, the exact same number as the entire Raiders team, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Oakland is the only team with fewer than 20 pressures this year. Mack ranks second among players in total pressures and pressure rate (min. 60 pass rushes) this season, only behind Bills DL Jerry Hughes.

Xavien Howard's interception off Derek Carr in the fourth quarter increased the Dolphins' chance to win by 40% and was the biggest win probability swing play in the 1 p.m. window today.

Trick plays help unbeaten Dolphins beat Raiders 28-20

Receiver Albert Wilson threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to put the Miami Dolphins ahead midway through the fourth quarter, and then turned a short reception into a 74-yard score that sealed a 28-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

Same story, different city. For the third time in as many games, the Raiders blew a second-half lead and lost with a fourth-quarter collapse after a strong offensive start. The 28-20 defeat at the Miami Dolphins, a game in which the Raiders led 17-7 in the third quarter, dropped Oakland to 0-3, leaving coach Jon Gruden winless in his return to the sidelines after spending the last nine years in ESPN's “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth. Gruden has also lost his last seven games as a head coach, dating to December of 2008 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Raiders have also lost seven straight, dating to last season. All with a suddenly dangerous and motivated Hue Jackson-led Cleveland Browns coming to Oakland next week.

For the third time in three games, the Raiders hold a halftime lead, this time 10-7 over the Dolphins in the South Florida heat and humidity. Oakland lost the previous two games. The Raiders dominated the first half against the Dolphins but only have the three-point lead after they failed to punch the ball in on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line. Still, receiver Jordy Nelson has 151 yards receiving, and a 12-yard TD, on four catches. Oakland, though, has lost safety Karl Joseph to a lower leg injury and right tackle Donald Penn was being evaluated for a concussion, according to the Raiders' radio broadcast.

Jordy Nelson reached a max speed of 21.05 mph on his 61-yard reception in the first quarter, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Nelson, 33, is by far the oldest player to reach 21 mph while carrying the football this season. Next oldest is Carlos Hyde in Week 1 (Hyde is currently 28 but was 27 at the time).

It's 90 degrees here in Miami Gardens. West Coast Raiders traveling cross country for early, hot game typically doesn't bode well. We will see how they respond. Dolphins have to take advantage.

Raiders inactives vs. Dolphins: DE Tank Carradine, DT P.J. Hall, OT Justin Murray, CB Nick Nelson, OT Brandon Parker, WR Seth Roberts, RB DeAndré Washington

With recent talk linking Colin Kaepernick to the Raiders, here's what Jon Gruden said at the NFL owners meetings in March when I asked him about Kaepernick: “I think there's a lot of intrigue there. His performance on the field wasn't very good, on tape. I think, Robert Griffin, a rookie of the year, surprised he's out there. Tim Tebow, takes a team to the playoffs, there's some surprise that he never came back. You know, Johnny Manziel, he's out there. Back to Kaepernick, you know he got beat out by (Blaine) Gabbert, to start the (2016) season. I think that says something. (But) I am surprised he's not in camp with somebody. He probably will be soon.”

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

As expected, Raiders rookie DT P.J. Hall (ankle) was ruled OUT of Sunday's game at Miami. Rookie CB Nick Nelson (hamstring) was listed as QUESTIONABLE. CB Leon Hall (illness), WR/RS Dwayne Harris (foot), C Rodney Hudson (ankle), RG Gabe Jackson (pectoral), RB Marshawn Lynch (shoulder) and OT Brandon Parker (ankle) did not have game status listings by their names.

Rookie OL Brandon Parker and DB Leon Hall returned to today's practice as FULL participants, while rookie CB Nick Nelson was added today with a hamstring issue.

Mack and Gruden will be forever tied (1:41)

The full Jon Gruden "pass rusher" quote from today: Question: What is it so hard to find a pass rusher? Gruden: “It's hard to find a great one. It's hard to find a good one. It's hard to find one. You just said it. College football now, they're not really dropping back to pass and throwing footballs anymore. They're throwing laterals and they're throwing bubble screens. They're running read options. So you have to train these guys. It takes a little bit of time to learn how to rush the passer. We have some guys that are in that process right now.”

Rookie defensive tackle P.J. Hall is not expected to play this weekend in Miami. He injured his left ankle in the season opener against the Rams.

Needing help for an anemic pass rush, the Raiders signed LB Shilique Calhoun from the practice squad on Tuesday. Oakland waived DT Brian Price in the corresponding roster move. Calhoun, a third-round pick of the Raiders in 2016, made Oakland's initial 53-man roster on Sept. 1 but was waived on Sept. 12. He was signed to the practice squad two days later. Calhoun had a strong preseason and has eight tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed, with five special teams tackles, in 20 career games. The Raiders (0-2) have two sacks in two games and lack of pressure late cost them dearly in Sunday's 20-19 loss at Denver. Oakland plays at Miami (2-0) on Sunday.
