ROOKIE REPORT: Third-round offensive lineman Dan Feeney continues to get a handful of snaps with the starters at right guard, along with playing center with the second unit. "I did all right," said Feeney, when asked how he played against the Seattle Seahawks last week. "There's still a bunch of stuff I have to work on. But for the first preseason game I think I did all right." Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Feeney remains in a battle for the starting right guard job with Kenny Wiggins. Undrafted rookie tight end Sean Culkin has looked comfortable as a blocker at H-back and catching the ball lined up in the slot. Lynn noted that undrafted rookie receiver Artavis Scott out of Clemson has made some plays in the passing game this week.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Chargers undrafted rookie Austin Ekeler made a nice catch and run on an arrow route near the goal line from Kellen Clemens, diving into the end zone and getting mobbed by his teammates. The cat-quick running back out of Western State Colorado University has made an impact as a pass-catcher out of the backfield his week. Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Ekeler is playing faster now that he has a better understanding of the offense.

INJURY UPDATE: Left tackle Russell Okung returned to practice on a limited basis after sitting out of Thursday's activities with what head coach Anthony Lynn said was a sore leg. However, Okung was limited to individual work while right tackle Joe Barksdale watched from the sidelines with a protective boot on his right foot. "If we had a game, those guys would probably be playing," Lynn said. "But now is the time to take care of those guys, let them rest and let them get well. And give us an opportunity to evaluate what's behind them." Lynn said CB Craig Mager remains out with a soft tissue injury. Others who did not practice include CB Casey Hayward (hamstring), CB Trovon Reed (hip), TE Sean McGrath (knee), TE Jeff Cumberland (legs), DE Jerry Attaochu (hamstring), DE Chris Landrum (shoulder), LB Denzel Perryman (ankle) and OL Forrest Lamp (knee). Rookie receiver Mike Williams remains on the physically unable to perform list with a lower back disc herniation. RB Kenjon Barner (concussion) is practicing on a limited basis, and Lynn said he does not anticipate the Oregon product playing on Sunday vs. the Saints.

Can the Chargers go from worst to first in 2017?

Projections don't factor in the Chargers' early injury issues in 2017. But few teams can boast a wide receiver corps as loaded as the Chargers', assuming Keenan Allen can stay on the field.

Former Chargers head coach Norv Turner, along with Norm Chow -- who coached Philip Rivers at North Carolina State -- were on hand at today's joint practice between the Chargers and Saints. Turner served as Brees' offensive coordinator for the Chargers his rookie season in 2001 and is a neighbor of his in Del Mar. "They're both ready to go," Turner said. "And to me, I'd expect both of them to have big years."

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who played his first five seasons in the NFL with the Chargers and still resides north of the city in Del Mar, had this to say about the Chargers moving to Los Angeles: "It's still Southern California. I think it seemed to be a business decision obviously as you move up here. I mean we're not in L.A., right? We're in Orange County, really."

OVERHEARD: "Tre' just likes to talk in general, which is OK," said Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, when asked if the secondary was communicating more on Wednesday. Third rounder Dan Feeney got a handful of reps at right guard and remains part of the competition with Kenny Wiggins for the starting job.
