SVP: Matthews' roughing the passer call is 'absurd' (1:12)

Rob Demovsky ESPN Staff Writer

Tough day for Randall Cobb -- who had two drops, a lost fumble and just four catches for 23 yards -- after what had been two solid weeks. He didn't hide from it. "I didn't give us an opportunity to win," Cobb said. "A third-down drop on the first drive, the fourth-down drop, a fumble, I played terrible and I didn't give us an opportunity to win." He wouldn't blame the rainy weather, either. "No, that has nothing to do with it," he said. "We've played in these conditions before. It's on me."

From the pool report, referee Craig Wrolstad on Clay Matthews' penalty: "I had judged that the defender landed on the quarterback when he was tackling him with most or all of his body weight and that's not allowed. If you do that, it's roughing the passer. So that was basically my key, that he landed on him with most or all of his body weight and that was my ruling, roughing the passer. "But if you've got a shoulder into him and then landed on him with most of his body weight off him or released him when he went down, then he would have been OK. But in my judgement, I ruled that he landed on him with most or all of his body weight there."

Matthews on NFL: 'They're getting soft' (1:21)

Aaron Rodgers said the referee told him he "couldn't see through the 14 guys" when Redskins rookie Daron Payne hit him. "I'm not asking for a call here but I wondering if he felt like he slammed me on my hand," Rodgers said he asked referee Craig Wrolstad.

Peterson runs for 120 yards, 2 TDs, Skins top Packers 31-17

Adrian Peterson ran for 120 yards and a pair of 2-yard scores, Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes -- all in the first half Sunday -- and the Washington Redskins held on for a 31-17 victory over a gimpy Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, who...

Clay Matthews on his roughing flag: "Obviously I don't agree wit it again. That's a football play ... I think they're getting soft." More from Matthews to come.

What to make of the Packers after three weeks? They could've lost to the Bears and Vikings. So being 1-1-1 maybe isn't as bad as it seems after Sunday's 31-17 loss at Washington, but this isn't the start anyone had in mind.

Matthews: NFL 'getting soft' with roughing calls

Clay Matthews said the NFL is "getting soft" after he was whistled for a third roughing-the-passer penalty this season, while the league took the unusual step of expressing immediate support for the call.

The Packers' D has given this team a chance, holding the Redskins to just one first down in the second half.

Byron Bell is now at right guard, replacing Lucas Patrick who replaced Justin McCray.

Matthews gets flagged again for roughing the passer (0:44)

Lance Kendricks dropped passes throughout the summer so was it really a big surprise that he dropped a big one on third down in the fourth quarter?

Now the medical staff is looking at Clay Matthews on the bench as the fourth quarter comes to an end with the Redskins leading 28-17.

Mike McCarthy had to be restrained on the sideline after another roughing the passer call against Clay Matthews. He's irate.

Aaron Rodgers is now playing on two bad legs -- add a right hamstring issue to his left knee and he's really moving slowly even after scrambling for 10 yards.
