FiveThirtyEight: Notre Dame is running out of time

The Irish's playoff odds took a noticeable hit, down to 21 percent. Both a strong one-loss Big 12 champ and an undefeated or one-loss Big Ten winner are better bets to make the playoff over Notre Dame.

Sherman: Why Iowa isn't boring

Safe to say TMZ won't be staking out the Iowa campus. But while the Hawkeyes might not be the most exciting team, there's nothing boring about 11-0.

For what it's worth to Notre Dame: Last year's No. 6 at this time was eventual national champion Ohio State. (In other words, Irish, just win at Stanford 59-0 on Saturday and leave no doubt.)

Ohio knocks off Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois failed to clinch a spot in the MAC title game as it fell to Ohio 26-21. That opens the door for No. 24 Toledo to win the MAC West title later this week with a victory.

At No. 9 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings, Stanford is still very much alive. The easiest path to the final four appears to involve both No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 7 Baylor losing on the road this weekend. But Cardinal coach David Shaw is more interested in his own team's remaining games, the next of which comes against Notre Dame. Instead of spending my time trying to guess whats going to happen, Id rather just play our games and see what happens," Shaw said today.

Why are No. 16 Northwestern and No. 9 Stanford so far apart in CFP rankings? Northwestern beat Stanford 16-6 in the season opener. Both teams are 9-2. Record of Northwestern's opponents: 52-47. Record of Stanford's opponents: 47-55. Northwestern has losses to No. 4 Iowa and No. 10 Michigan. Stanford has losses to No. 16 Northwestern and No. 17 Oregon.

Northern Illinois fails on onside dropkick

Northern Illinois needed an onside kick to keep its hopes alive against Ohio. However, Christian Hagan went a little different by going for a dropkick, but was recovered easily by Ohio.

Ohio holds on against Northern Illinois

The committee preached patience with regard to the Big 12, saying the conference was saving its best games for last. Those words are coming true with tonights rankings of No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 7 Baylor representing the clear amount of respect for both teams. The third-ranked Sooners seem set to land a playoff spot, particularly with No. 11 Oklahoma State as their final test. Baylor seems in perfect position to strike if any of the six teams above them falter and Fridays road trip to No. 19 TCU providing another chance to add to the resume.

Also keep an eye on the Ole Miss-Miss. State winner. If Florida loses to Florida State the winner of that game could jump the Gators and knock them out of the Sugar Bowl spot. Committee would have to take top-rated SEC team behind Bama if the Tide then beats UF in the SEC title game and goes to the playoff

Edward Aschoff ESPN Staff Writer

Florida justly drops from 8th to 12th in the CFB Rankings after an ugly 20-14 OT win over FAU. Gators failing the eye test now and you have to wonder if they'll need help even if they beat No. 13 FSU and No. 2 Bama. Don't forget the eye test really means something. And what if Notre Dame wins out too? What if another one-loss Big 12 team takes OU's spot?

Notre Dame goes down in CFP rankings

Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis, Joey Galloway and Danny Kanell break down the top 4 teams in this weeks CFP rankings, which now doesn't include the Irish.

Greg Ostendorf ESPN Staff Writer

Down year for the SEC? With Florida dropping to No. 12 after Saturday's overtime win over FAU, there is only one SEC team (Alabama) in the top 10 and just four SEC teams in the top 25.
