Marcus Smart missed a month because of a thigh injury and a hand injury. He believes the time off will help him down the stretch of the season. "To have that break, it's kind of like my break was kind of like a cheat-sheet for me," Smart said after Friday's win. "I got fresh legs ... still working out the kinks in my legs, but it just gives me more energy to bring to this team and intensity and pick this team up especially on the defensive end."

Kyrie Irving on the Celtics bench giving his team a big lift in Friday's win. Boston's bench outscored the Pistons' bench 65-21: "It builds a lot of confidence to be able to play our style of basketball for a full 48 minute game. I believe we had 30 assists tonight so the ball was hopping, getting in the paint and attacking the defense, and creating opportunities for one another. Defensively after the first quarter I felt like once we limited their transition game, made them play against our half court defense then we did a great job. When our bench is playing like that, we're making shots, they play with the type of pace they did tonight, the unselfishness, it makes the game a lot easier."

Jaylen Brown on Celtics heading into the final 23 games: "I think we have a sense of urgency about ourselves. ... You can see some of the older guys -- Kyrie, Al -- their attention to detail and the stress about the little things is becoming more evident."

Celtics guard Marcus Smart did not practice Thursday due to a minor hip bruise suffered during his return to practice activities Wednesday. Smart, who missed Boston's final 11 games before the All-Star break due to a lacerated hand, is still expected to return to game action Friday night in Detroit, according to coach Brad Stevens.

Celtics' Smart: Injury could've ended season

Celtics guard Marcus Smart is ready to return from a lacerated hand that doctors say he was lucky to have not injured more extensively.

Chris Forsberg ESPN Staff Writer

Marcus Smart said doctors pulled a shard of glass out the palm of his hand after his frame-punching incident in LA. It barely missed the tendons near his pinky, which would have likely meant season-ending surgery. Said Smart: "Literally the glass was sitting right in between [two tendons]. So [the doctors said], ‘You should go play the lotto or something because you missed your tendons.' They don't understand it."
