After being punted to the sidelines in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes, the Cardinals plucked another pitcher out of Japan, signing former Padres and Rangers righty Miles Mikolas. He was one of the best starters in Japan last season with a 2.25 ERA and superb 187-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 188 innings. At two years and $15.5 million, Mikolas only has to perform as a back-end starter to justify the deal and the relative small deal means there's still money to make a big splash -- like trading for Giancarlo Stanton.

Hot stove stock watch: Cardinals

The upside to the Cardinals' disappointing 2017 season is that it motivates them moving forward. An impact player tacked onto this baseline would put them back near baseball's elite tier.
