Sunday's longest home runs

A pair of Astros sluggers hit two of the five longest home runs on Sunday, but Cardinals LF Randal Grichuk led the way. Meanwhile, Travis Shaw's 429-foot homer is his 15th of the season, just one short of his career high in 145 games last season.

The Cardinals take the final game of the series against the Pirates, but they're still just 13-25 over their past 28 games. One thing they need is more bullpen efforts like Sunday night's, as four relievers combined for one hit over three scoreless innings. The Cards have seven losses when leading entering the seventh inning -- and now they're 4-7 when tied thanks to a four-run seventh.

We know starters aren't necessarily expected to go deep into games, but Chad Kuhl's record this season is a little ridiculous. This is now 12 starts in a row he hasn't gone more than five innings. Can you keep a guy like that in rotation? This is somewhat by design as the Pirates haven't let him throw 100 pitches in a game all season, but it sure taxes the bullpen.

If not for Chad Kuhl's quick reflexes Sunday night, he might have become the Pirates' second pitcher to get hit in the head by a line drive in less than a year. The right-hander snared a hard shot off the bat of the Cardinals' Paul DeJong to end the fourth inning. A liner hit by the Brewers' Hernan Perez struck Jameson Taillon in the back of the head last July 19, but he was OK and able to stay in the game.

The Pirates counter with three runs off Mike Leake in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Leake allowed more than two runs just once in his first nine starts, but entered this game with a 5.28 ERA his previous five starts. The difference? His BABIP increased from .239 (probably a little lucky) to .322 (the balls in play were finding holes).

Chad Kuhl is throwing 98 mph for the Pirates, but the Cardinals are sitting on the fastball and Greg Garcia -- who was 2-for-29 in June -- just lined a two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals the early lead in the second inning.

One of the things to look for in tonight's Pirates-Cardinals game is former MVP Andrew McCutchen, who has looked revitalized since moving to the sixth spot in the lineup on May 26. It probably doesn't have anything to do with where's he's hitting, but since moving down he's hitting .385 with a 1.187 OPS and eight home runs in 27 games.

Carpenter heating up

Cardinals 1B Matt Carpenter has enjoyed a productive past few weeks at the plate, helping him rebound from a sluggish start to the season. The statistical surge has coincided with St. Louis moving him to the leadoff spot in the batting order.
