One key move for the Phillies this offseason

The Phils could wait and make a play for Bryce Harper, Manny Machado or Gerrit Cole next offseason. Or they could start by making a splash this winter and adding one of the top free agents.

NTSB: Halladay climbed sharply before dive

Roy Halladay, in the final seconds before plummeting into the Gulf of Mexico in his new sport plane two weeks ago, was climbing sharply, a federal report says, citing the plane's data.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

As teams maneuver today to add players to their 40-man rosters, one name jumps out: the Phillies designated Mark Appel for assignment. The Astros famously selected Appel first overall in 2013, one spot ahead of Kris Bryant. Traded to the Phillies in the Ken Giles deal, he had a 5.60 ERA at Triple-A and spent time on the DL with a shoulder issue. His minor league track record has been abysmal and he looks like he'll be one of those great "What went wrong?" players of history. Let's hope the right organization can find a way to fix him.

Finding the best spot for Giancarlo Stanton

When the Phillies are ready to compete, they'll be willing to spend big for the players they want. But it would be a major disaster for the organization to acquire Stanton just for him to opt out after 2020.

Will Rhys Hoskins deliver bigger things in 2018?

Hoskins looks good across the board, and you have to be impressed by a rookie with just nine more strikeouts than walks. Yet at the same time, only 14 of his 50 starts came against teams that were .500 or better.

Mallee had been the Cubs' hitting coach since 2014 and was let go at the end of this season. Wathan managed in the Phillies' system since 2008, most recently at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ranking all 30 clubs by triumphs and fails: Phillies

A number of young, core players either made the leap to the majors or made leaps in the majors. However, a few of the Phillies' prospects took steps backwards, which likely adds up to one extra year of rebuilding.
