The Dodgers, under Andrew Friedman, have been defined mostly by building depth and practicing prudence. But this is two straight summers now when they also went out and got the guy they needed, even though they were pending free agents — Yu Darvish last year, Manny Machado this year. Machado alone is great, but the trickle-down effect for a Dodgers position-player group that is exceedingly versatile is also worth noting.

Dodgers land Machado, send 5 prospects to O's

The Orioles traded All-Star shortstop Manny Machado to the Dodgers on Wednesday for prospects Yusniel Diaz, Dean Kremer, Rylan Bannon, Zach Pop and Breyvic Valera.

BBTN: Machado Deal, All-Star Recap, Manfred

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen, after the All-Star Game, on the prospect of adding Manny Machado: "If it does happen, it would be awesome. That would lift our lineup. Hopefully we can get a few pieces in the bullpen, and this is go time. He's a great guy and we would love to have him here."

Machado worth the risk for Dodgers? (1:22)

With the Dodgers reportedly on the verge of acquiring Manny Machado, here's what president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told me recently about balancing prudence with chasing stars: "I think the No. 1 thing we're solving for is winning baseball games and trying to put ourselves in position to be as good as we can in the current year, while maintaining that ability as far as we see out. That's the primary driver in everything that we do. That plays out in different ways at different periods of time. One thing I think I appreciate most about this job is the passion that our fans have for the Dodgers. That's something that struck me right away and I continue to encounter, whether it's at the ballpark or at Starbucks or wherever. And we feel a pretty fee responsibility to do everything we can to bring a championship back to Los Angeles, and to put ourselves in position to contend for a championship perennially. With that, we have to balance some short term and long term."

After Matt Kemp's second-inning double, AL shortstop Manny Machado moseyed over to second base, whipped out his phone, and snapped a selfie of him and the Dodgers outfielder. Depending on which rumor mill you frequent, Machado and Kemp might have a whole lot more photo opps real soon.

Would Machado put Dodgers over the top? (1:39)

A crowd of reporters waited by Mike Trout's locker before tonight's All-Star Game. But they weren't there for him — they were there for the guy whose locker is right next to him: Manny Machado. Later, after Machado had taken a few questions — saying he had heard "nothing" from either the Orioles or his agent — Trout was asked how his All-Star teammate is handling all the trade rumors. "He's handling it. He's gotta be going through some emotions. It's probably tough for him. He doesn't know where he's going to be playing," Trout said. "He knows he's going to be traded but doesn't know where. But I'm sure he wants this thing to be over." As a baseball fan, how much is Trout following the story? "Obviously, when you see one of the big guys in the market get traded, you want to see where he's going. I just wish it was [to] the Angels."

Rob Manfred joins the show.

Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon question if it's okay that Bryce Harper and his Dad broke the rules, if Manny Machado would put the Dodgers over the top, if the 76ers reaching out to Morey is a surprise and more. Plus, Rob Manfred joins the show.

Max Muncy lost in the second round of the HR Derby to Bryce Harper, but it's still amazing that he even got there. He has 22 home runs in 74 games after managing only 5 in 96 major league games heading into this season. Throughout, he has credited a restructured approach, which has him crouching more into his stance and getting more upward trajectory with his swing. "I've always felt the power was there," Muncy said recently. "It's just my swing wasn't built for hitting home runs before, whereas now, I feel like I get myself in a better position to use it."

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Max Muncy with the walk-off! The surprise star of the season hits home runs on eight consecutive swings late in his round and then hits his 17th with time remaining to beat Javier Baez and tie Rhys Hoskins for the best round so far. Not bad for a guy who began the season in Triple-A.
