Combining performance so far with projections, we break down which groups of starters are elite and which are baseball's weakest.

Mike Scioscia on maximizing Mike Trout's chances to hit with men on base (81 players have more plate appearances with RISP this season): "If we had another Mike to put in front of Mike, we'd be OK." He's used that one before.

Mike Trout, on getting pitched around: "I'm just looking for my pitch. If it's not there, I'm taking my walks. For me, if I try to expand the strike zone, that's when I get in trouble."

Angels RF Kole Calhoun, on Mike Trout: "This is not an easy game, and this guy makes it look easier and easier every year. It's a special talent that we're not going to see too many times, so enjoy it now."

The Angels win (5-4 over the D-backs) for only the second time in their last nine games. Mike Trout reached base every time he came to bat and is OPS'ing a Major League-best 1.158.

Even when Mike Trout makes an out, he doesn't. He hit a one-hopper to the second baseman, but the D-backs were called for catcher's interference. He has still made only 7 outs in his last 36 plate appearances.

Calhoun adds to Angels' lead with dinger (0:21)

That home run had to feel really good for Kole Calhoun. It's his first since Opening Day. He came in with a 153/202/188 slash line and had completely altered his batting stance, with a heavier crouch and lower hands. He told me last night that's basically the position he ends up in after his load; he's just starting there now to simplify the approach and eliminate excess movement. "You gotta change something when you're hitting .145," he said.

Correcting an earlier post: Over his last 8 games, Mike Trout has reached base in 27 of his last 36 plate appearances. Even more impressive: He has reached base safely in 22 of his last 27 plate appearances, per the Angels' PR staff.

Three runs score on Trout's single (0:29)

The D-backs were forced to pitch to Mike Trout because the bases were loaded, and he lined the first pitch he saw into center field, which ultimately brought in three runs. Trout's last 33 plate appearances: 16 hits, 4 home runs, 9 RBIs, 11 walks.

Kinsler hammers homer to left (0:18)

Nine of Mike Trout's last 25 plate appearances have now ended in a walk. There's little reason to pitch to him right now. The man behind him, Justin Upton, entered batting .214 in his last eight games. Behind him is Albert Pujols, with a .285 on-base percentage for the year.

The Angels have lost 7 of their last 8 and have gone from 3 1/2 to 10 1/2 back in the AL West during that stretch. Mike Trout says his team can't think about that. "If you do that, it's going to snowball, and it's just going to get worse."

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Over his last seven games, Mike Trout has reached base via a walk or a hit in 24 of his 33 plate appearances. The Angels, who lost 7-4 to the D-backs tonight, are 1-6 in that stretch.
