Hamilton, pitcher who hit Conigliaro in '67, dies

Jack Hamilton, whose errant inside pitch damaged the eyesight of Boston's Tony Conigliaro in 1967 and caused a premature end to the career of the Red Sox star, died Thursday at the age of 79.

As another day passes without J.D. Martinez's contract being finalized, it isn't unusual for free-agent deals to be held up for days or even weeks by lengthy medical reviews and/or changes in contract language based on concerns over a potential future injury. The Red Sox went through such situations with J.D. Drew (also a Scott Boras client) and John Lackey. In 2013, the Sox completely re-worked a deal with Mike Napoli after the physical revealed a hip condition.

Jackie Bradley Jr.'s OPS by month last season: .596, .808, 1.009, .596, .770, .517. On his reputation as a "streaky" hitter: "I feel like I haven't played my best baseball yet. I don't like to feed into that so-called streaky thing. I know what I'm capable of doing and it's just getting back to doing that on a consistent basis."

Alex Cora on the continuing wait for J.D. Martinez: "I'm not concerned." Said his focus is solely on the players who are in camp.

Blake Swihart can't always be sure of the position — catcher? first base? left field? — but he knows he'll play a lot in spring training. Sure, the former top catching prospect is competing for a Red Sox bench job, but clearly, he has a chance to make an impression on other teams, too. Out of options, Swihart is a candidate to be traded before the end of spring training.

Red Sox continuing with J.D. Martinez physical

For a second day in a row, the Red Sox said there would not be a news conference to introduce free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez because his physical had not been completed.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Dave Dombrowski on the delay in finalizing J.D. Martinez's five-year, $110 million contract: "All I can say is that he continues to take his physical." Dombrowski said he's "unsure" whether Martinez would work out with the Red Sox on Friday.

A team source told me the Red Sox "are being thorough" and that's the reason for the delay in the official announcement of the JD Martínez signing.

Once again, the Red Sox won't have an official announcement today on J.D. Martinez. The physical has not yet been completed, according to the team.

As the Red Sox play the opener of their annual spring-training college doubleheader, an amazing stat: By my count, 21-year-old third baseman Rafael Devers is younger than 10 players on Northeastern's roster.

Per Elias, this marks the first time the Yankees and Red Sox both added players coming off 30-homer seasons in the same offseason. Giancarlo Stanton hit 59 in Miami last year, J.D. Martinez hit 45 in Arizona.

Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens on being asked to speak to the Red Sox at spring training earlier this week: "Well first of all, I told them like I am not qualified to speak to a baseball team. I got picked off the last play of my career in high school."

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Don't expect J.D. Martinez to work out with the Red Sox on Thursday, according to Dave Dombrowski. But don't read anything into it either. My understanding is that the logistics of completing a physical are more challenging when it's being conducted away from Boston. It takes a bit longer than usual to collect all the information and get it reviewed.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Red Sox won't have the results of J.D. Martinez's physical until at least Thursday.

Marly Rivera ESPN Writer

Yankees GM Brian Cashman on whether the Yanks and Sox are now on "equal footing": "Ultimately we're not on the same ground because they are the American League East champions, and until someone takes that away from them, you have to pay that homage."

BBTN: How Trades Impact Free Agency, Tanking In The Sunshine State

Buster Olney talks to Jerry Crasnick about how Tuesday's big trade impacts remaining free agents, tanking in the state of Florida and more (9:01). Plus, Marc Topkin brings some "Inside Heat" on the Rays (27:17) and Paul Hembekides goes inside the numbers in the debut of "Hembo Knows" (34:51).

David Price on the potential impact that J.D. Martinez could make on the AL East race: "To add a hitter like that to the lineup, that's good, especially in this division. The Yankees made moves this offseason. To be able to combat those moves with a guy like J.D., that was a good move."
