ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Cuban rookie Yoenis Cespedes is adjusting to life in America and the big leagues on a daily basis.
The 26-year-old center fielder had two hits Tuesday night, including a two-run single during a four-run eighth inning rally that carried the A's to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Cespedes had nine RBIs in his first 11 games despite a .246 average."He's making progress everywhere, and he works very hard at it," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's working on his English, he's working on his dialogue with teammates, and it seems like each and every day he's more comfortable. He has more to deal with off the field than on the field, and we haven't lost sight of that.More on the Angels

Game notes
The A's optioned RHP Andrew and OF Collin Cowgill to clear roster spots for Ross and RHP Neil Wagner, who were recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. Ross was the team's final cut in spring training. ... The A's had scored in only one of their previous 31 innings before Barton's homer. ... The A's have failed to reach double digits in hits in any of their first 12 games, the longest such streak from the start of a season since the franchise relocated from Kansas City to Oakland in 1968.

Research Notes
Well-hit average is a metric that measures the percent of at-bats resulting in a well-hit ball, as judged by Inside Edge scouts. Albert Pujols did not have a well-hit ball Tuesday, and his .178 well-hit average so far is well below his standard rates. [+] |
