The San Diego Padres' recent surge includes some rare success at the plate, and Yangervis Solarte has been a big part of that.

After a two-run homer provided the difference in the Padres' latest victory, Solarte looks to help them to a fourth straight win Tuesday night against the NL-worst Colorado Rockies.

San Diego (55-62) is hitting .278 while winning nine of 12 games, a major improvement since the Padres have raised their major-league-worst season average seven points to .225 over that span.

Solarte is certainly helping, batting .296 with 11 RBIs and 14 runs in 18 games -- 12 wins -- since being acquired in a trade from the New York Yankees on July 22. The 27-year-old rookie was hitting .254 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 75 games with the Yankees.

He came through in a big way Monday, connecting for his third homer with the Padres to put them ahead for good in the seventh inning of a 4-3 win over Colorado (46-72).

The Padres are giving the ball to Odrisamer Despaigne (2-3, 3.10 ERA), who hasn't won since winning his first two career starts by yielding one run in 13 2/3 innings. The rookie right-hander from Cuba is 0-3 with a 4.04 ERA in six starts since, and he owns a 7.20 ERA while plunking three batters and going 0-2 over his last three.

He gave up four runs and eight hits with three walks and two hit batsmen in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-4 win in 10 at Minnesota on Wednesday.

"He's been a little bit too up out over the plate for the most part," manager Bud Black said.

The Rockies are tied with Texas for the worst record in baseball, losing 12 of 15 while posting a 5.19 ERA, .238 batting average and scoring 3.9 runs per game. Corey Dickerson accounted for the offense Monday with a three-run homer.

He is 10 for 24 (.417) with two homers and nine RBIs in six games, and continuing that success would be welcome with Yohan Flande (0-4, 5.77) taking the mound.

He's again seeking his first career win, and solving his issues late in games could go a long way to ending that drought.

The rookie left-hander has allowed opponents to hit .291 through seven games -- six starts -- but much of the damage has occurred in the third time through a lineup. All three homers he's allowed have come in that scenario, and hitters are 11 for 25 (.440) compared to .255 over the first two turns.

Flande gave up four runs Thursday, with two coming on solo homers before he left after the sixth inning of a 6-2 defeat to the Chicago Cubs.

"I try to do my best every time I go out there," Flande told MLB's official website through interpreter and teammate Jorge De La Rosa. "A bad thing always happens in the last inning. I'll try to fix that."

The Dominican left-hander's lack of finishing has resulted in him giving up 14 runs over the final innings of his six starts.
