The San Diego Padres' offense has entered the record books, and they're not too proud of the distinction.

The Padres will once again try to get their anemic lineup going in an effort to salvage a win in this three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

San Diego (34-47) owns the worst record in the NL, and that's due in large part to a historic lack of hitting. The Padres' .213 average is the worst at the halfway point in a season in franchise history, and the lowest a team has hit at the 81-game mark since the 1968 New York Yankees were at .212.

San Diego is on pace to register the lowest average for a season since the Chicago White Sox batted .211 in 1910, well below the Padres' franchise low of .225 in their inaugural season of 1969.

The Padres have batted .125 while scoring two runs during a three-game slide that started when they were no-hit by San Francisco's Tim Lincecum on Wednesday.

They've followed that up by totaling 11 hits -- 10 singles -- in a pair of losses to Arizona (35-48), including Saturday's 3-1 defeat.

With the offense searching for a way out of the abyss, Odrisamer Despaigne will try to replicate his stellar major league debut from Monday. The right-hander, who defected from Cuba in May, allowed four hits in seven innings of a 6-0 win at San Francisco.

"He pitched great didn't he?" Padres manager Bud Black asked. "Are you kidding me? That was great."

Despaigne will face a Diamondbacks team that's batted .238 while dropping 10 of 16. Arizona, though, has only needed five runs and 12 hits to put itself on the brink of sweeping this three-game set.

Miguel Montero has gone 9 for 25 (.360) with two homers and five RBIs in his past seven meetings with San Diego. The catcher connected for a two-run shot to put the Diamondbacks up for good in the sixth inning Saturday, moving them percentage points ahead of the Padres for fourth in the NL West.

"I guess it's good to get out of last place," Montero said. "I hope we continue like that and see where we are going."

Martin Prado, who had two hits Saturday, is 7 for 19 with two homers and six RBIs in his last five games against the Padres.

Mike Bolsinger (1-3, 4.78) will face them for the first time as he gets another turn in the rotation in place of the injured Bronson Arroyo. The rookie right-hander is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two starts since being recalled from Triple-A Reno for his second stint in the majors this year.

He turned in perhaps his best performance of the season last Sunday, yielding one run and five hits in 7 2/3 innings, but was charged with a 4-1 loss to San Francisco after a pitchers' duel with Madison Bumgarner.

"I came up, had a little success, went down and now I'm coming back," Bolsinger told MLB's official website. "I just want to keep rolling with it."
