The Oakland Athletics own the best road record in the majors, and Sonny Gray is partly responsible for that.

Gray looks to continue his dominance as the visitor when the A's attempt to send the injury-riddled Baltimore Orioles to another home defeat Saturday night.

Oakland is 21-11 away from home, helping it jump out to the AL's best record at 38-23.

Both of those statuses didn't change in the opener of this three-game series Friday as Stephen Vogt's pinch-hit single in the 11th inning gave Oakland a 4-3 win.

The A's have won six of seven, and turning to Gray (6-1, 2.45 ERA) gives them a good chance of adding another victory.

"You always feel good when he takes the mound," manager Bob Melvin told the team's official website.

That is especially true on the road, where the second-year right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.37 ERA in seven starts since losing 10-3 at Baltimore on Aug. 25.

Gray gave up six runs while being pulled with one out in the fourth inning of that outing.

Still, Vogt -- a catcher -- feels Gray is much better since then.

"His pitches are moving a little different, he's (got) good command, and he's more mature than he was in the fall," Vogt said. "He's something special, he still is."

Gray, though, allowed seven runs and 15 hits in 12 2/3 innings over his last two starts -- both at home -- while going 1-0.

Oakland's Josh Donaldson is batting .333 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs over the last 12 games. He hit a solo shot Friday and was hit by a pitch following an incident at third base when Baltimore's Manny Machado took umbrage with the force of a tag.

"I just tried to tag the guy. I was walking over there to go pick his helmet up for him, then he jumps up and starts yelling at me," Donaldson said. "I don't know what happened on his end, but I'm just trying to do my job and play the game of baseball."

Donaldson has homered in his last two games against the Orioles (30-29) and is batting .370 with 10 RBIs in his last eight meetings.

Baltimore has dropped seven of nine at home, thanks in large part to a 5.13 ERA from the rotation.

Miguel Gonzalez was scheduled to start Saturday, but a strained right oblique made him the eighth Oriole on the disabled list. Baltimore also lost Johan Santana to a torn Achilles tendon suffered while trying to return to the majors for the first time since 2012.

Now, the Orioles can get a glimpse of the future with rookie Kevin Gausman taking the mound.

Gausman -- one of the team's top pitching prospects -- struggled in his only appearance this year, giving up five runs and six hits in four innings of a 7-5 loss to Detroit on May 14. The right-hander went 3-5 with a 5.66 ERA in 20 games last season, including 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA in five starts.

Gausman compiled a 2.98 ERA while going 1/3 in 10 starts for Triple-A Norfolk.

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is batting .389 in his last 18 games, but he's made four errors in the past two after having one in his first 49 contests.
