Brewers-Rockies Preview

As the Milwaukee Brewers look to fill a key spot following Ryan Braun's suspension, Jean Segura has yet to prove he can produce as their No. 3 hitter.

The Brewers hope to get something out of Braun's old place in the lineup and avoid their fifth loss in six games without him as they visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

NL Central-worst Milwaukee (42-60) fell to 1-4 since losing their star slugger for the rest of the season with Friday's 8-3 loss at Coors Field. Clean-up batter Carlos Gomez provided one of the few highlights with his 17th homer and is 8 for 13 with four RBIs in his last three games.

Although they scored their most runs since June 25 in Thursday's 10-8 loss to San Diego, the Brewers are hitting .216 -- including 9 for 47 (.191) with runners in scoring position -- over their last six games.

Segura, who leads the team with a .313 average, went 1 for 4 with two strikeouts in Friday's loss and has gone 2 for 21 while batting in the third spot each of the last five games.

With Segura and the Brewers scuffling at the plate, this could be a perfect spot for Collin McHugh (0-1, 10.29 ERA) to make his debut with the Rockies (50-54).

McHugh, acquired from the Mets for Eric Young Jr. last month, looks to help Colorado win its fifth in nine games on this homestand. He replaces injured left-hander Drew Pomeranz (bicep tendinitis) in the rotation after going 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA combined for Triple-A Las Vegas and Colorado Springs.

McHugh had one start with the Mets, allowing four runs and six hits over four-plus innings in an 8-1 loss at Miami on June 1. He's 0-4 with a 7.52 ERA in five career starts.

The right-hander gave up one run and two hits in 2/3 innings of relief in a 9-6 loss at Milwaukee on Sept. 15.

Norichika Aoki, who had an RBI single off McHugh in that contest, looks to extend a seven-game hitting streak in this meeting.

Teammate Rickie Weeks went 2 for 4 Friday to end a 2-for-32 slump. He's 11 for 20 in his last five games versus Colorado.

After scoring an NL-low 58 runs in their previous 20 games, the Rockies scored eight times in the first four innings and went 5 for 12 with runners in scoring position in the series opener.

They'll try to build on the performance against Milwaukee starter Tom Gorzelanny (1-4, 2.47), who hopes to bounce back from his worst start of the year.

After allowing no earned runs in his first two outings since moving into the rotation, the left-hander gave up a season-high five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to San Diego on Monday.

Gorzelanny is 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA in six career appearances in Denver, though his last start there came in 2010. He's allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief in two games against the Rockies this season.

This time, he might not have to face All-Star Carlos Gonzalez, who is 6 for 9 with a triple and two doubles in this matchup.

Gonzalez, tied for the NL lead with 26 home runs, did not play Friday and remains day to day after spraining his right middle finger in a 5-3 loss to Miami on Thursday.
