Giants-Brewers Preview

Milwaukee Brewers staff ace Yovani Gallardo has put together three subpar outings.

His worst moment of the season, however, came on a day he didn't pitch.

Two days after he was arrested on a drunken-driving charge with a blood-alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit, Gallardo is scheduled to take the ball as the Brewers try to sweep the visiting San Francisco Giants in Thursday's finale.

A motorist reported seeing a driver repeatedly swerving between lanes about 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning, and deputies spotted Gallardo driving alone at 40 mph in a 55-mph zone. Authorities say a breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level of 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08, and the reading was matched by a second breath test following his arrest.

In Wisconsin, first-offense drunken driving is a citation, not a misdemeanor or felony charge. Milwaukee County sheriff's spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin said Gallardo faces nearly $800 in fines for drunken driving and for unsafe driving.

Prior to Tuesday's opener, Gallardo apologized for his actions.

"I made a bad decision," he said. "I made a mistake and I'm sure I lost a lot of respect from the fans and I just want to apologize to the fans, my teammates, my family.

"Like I said, it's just a bad call. Something I shouldn't have done. I regret it. ... It's just ... it's not very easy. It's one of those things ... I truly am sorry."

On the mound, Gallardo (0-1, 6.61 ERA) hasn't much resembled the pitcher that won 16 games last season. He gave up six runs over 5 1/3 innings in Saturday's 8-0 loss to St. Louis, and opponents are batting .371 off him.

He's also not fooling many batters, striking out three in each of his three starts -- an average of 5.0 per nine innings. From 2009-12, Gallardo recorded four straight 200-strikeout seasons and ranked fourth in the majors with an average of 9.4 per nine innings.

A matchup with the Giants might be what Gallardo needs to get things turned around.

In six starts against San Francisco since 2009, the right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.91 ERA -- tied for his lowest ERA against any team.

The Giants (9-6) arrived in Milwaukee winners of six of seven but have dropped the first two with the Brewers (5-8), who had just two victories in their previous 10 games.

Milwaukee won 4-3 Wednesday on Blake Lalli's pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth, scoring Josh Prince from third. Prince got to third on an ill-advised, off-balance throw by shortstop Brandon Crawford in an attempt to get Carlos Gomez out at first two batters earlier.

"He didn't have a shot there," manager Bruce Bochy said of Crawford's decision.

Seeking their first home sweep over the Giants since 2008, the Brewers go up against Matt Cain (0-1, 5.94), whose 5.56 ERA in five starts at Miller Park is his second-worst at any NL ballpark.

Cain, who had the majors' third-best home ERA last year at 2.03, has been solid in his two road starts this season, posting a 1.38 ERA while striking out 14 in 13 innings. At Wrigley Field on Friday, the righty gave up two runs on a pair of homers over seven innings in a game the Cubs rallied to win 4-3.

Ryan Braun is batting .364 with a double and triple in 22 at-bats versus Cain, but the Milwaukee slugger is 1 for 18 with 11 strikeouts in his last five games.

San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval, who is batting .350 with 12 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak, is 2 for 15 lifetime against Gallardo.
