Rhule 'able to do a lot more football' in 2nd year

After much of his first year was spent working to change the culture in the aftermath of a sexual assault scandal that occurred at Baylor before he got to campus, coach Matt Rhule feels more of his focus can now be on football.

Randy Gregory is grateful he will have another chance to earn a living with the Dallas Cowboys after being conditionally reinstated by the NFL. “It is (my final chance) and if it's not I'm definitely treating it like it is,” Gregory told ESPN. “I feel like a lot of other organizations wouldn't have stuck around for this ling. I think part of it is just the faith in what I can do on the field, but they also saw that I was a struggling kid that was trying to get himself back on the right path ...I'm a totally different person than I was coming into the league. In some ways better. I think Jerry (Jones) and the whole organization, they understood the situation fully and there was going to be some setbacks. Hopefully this is the last one as far as all that.”

Because of the two suspensions, the Cowboys have Randy Gregory under contract through 2020. He signed a four-year deal as a second-round pick in 2015.

Cowboys don't sign Lawrence before deadline

The Cowboys did not agree with DeMarcus Lawrence on a long-term deal by Monday's deadline to sign franchised players. The star defensive end will play this season under a $17.143 million franchise tag.

No surprise here: with 4 p.m. deadline closing, multiple sources say the Cowboys and DeMarcus Lawrence will not reach a long-term deal, which means Lawrence will play 2018 on the franchise tag. Lawrence signed the $17.143 million tag in March and there have been no discussions on a multi-year deal since. It is quite possible the Cowboys and Lawrence go through the same dance in 2019, especially if he has another Pro Bowl-type season.
