Chip Kelly is back and looking to dominate

Chip Kelly doesn't do much talking, even those closest to him will tell you that. But it's one of the reasons why Kelly's decision to take over at UCLA makes perfect sense.

UCLA offensive lineman Jake Burton was asked about any specific scheme that Chip Kelly has implemented. He smiled. "Probably just going fast." "I heard his practices were fast, and then I got out to practice, and they were all true," Burton said. "Super fast; they're really physical. His biggest thing is you have to fly around; you have to play with your hair on fire. And if you mess up, mess up going a hundred miles an hour."

UCLA offensive lineman Michael Alves, when asked if he is confident Chip Kelly can turn that offense around: "He's one of the smartest football minds I've ever met. It's like he knows every little thing on every play. He's probably supposed to, but it's just cool to see that every mistake we make, he sees it right away. Every mistake the wide receivers make, he sees it right away. Just the way our offense is run is really cool. It all works together like a puzzle, so I think it's going to work out great."

UCLA WR Dymond Lee said Chip Kelly "changed the game. That's crazy that our head coach now is someone who really changed the game of football." Lee watched Kelly's Oregon teams closely growing up. The big surprise when he started practicing for him: "I guess growing up I never really anticipated how much work you have to put in at this level in training. We only got to see what they were out there doing on Saturdays and them winning by 40 or 50 every week. But there's a lot of hard work that goes into it. That's what we're looking for."

UCLA LB Josh Woods already has a favorite Chip Kelly saying: "Our normal is your abnormal." They're going to play at a lightning-fast pace, which will make it difficult for him to communicate calls to his defense. "That's exactly why Coach Kelly has us at such a fast pace (during practice)," Woods said. "We have to stay on our toes. We have to hurry up with the calls, see the whole formation, get our calls in. Like Coach Kelly said, ‘We're going at speeds that other schools are not moving at.' They have our young equipment guys placing the balls before we tag off on the ball carrier."

Speight sold on Kelly pitch for NFL-style offense

Wilton Speight, who left Michigan for UCLA, was sold by Chip Kelly's pitch that the offense would be similar to what the coach ran in the NFL if the transfer won the job.

New UCLA coach Chip Kelly called his 2017, which he spent as a college football analyst, his "gap year," but said he had fun. He called his QB situation "a wide-open deal" and summoned John Wooden's thoughts on internal focus when asked about residing in the shadow of USC. "The short time that I've been in Los Angeles, there aren't many shadows because there aren't many clouds in the sky," Kelly joked. On coming to LA: "I know I'm not the prettiest person in the room." On returning to Autzen Stadium, where he coached at Oregon: "It'll be difficult, to be honest with you. It's a special place."

Rookie WR Darren Andrews (UCLA) cleared waivers and reverts to the Patriots' reserve/non-football injury list. He doesn't count against the 90-man roster limit. After he tore ACL last November, Andrews can now be factored into the Patriots' 2019 planning.

Rosen revises: 3 'mistakes' picked ahead of me

Josh Rosen admitted he "was a little emotional" Thursday after being drafted, and Friday, as he was being introduced by the Cardinals, he revised the number of "mistakes" picked ahead of him from nine to three -- just the quarterbacks.

Rosen 'pissed' at falling to Cards at No. 10

Josh Rosen was "pissed" that he fell to the Cardinals with the 10th pick in the NFL draft. "There were nine mistakes ahead of me," he said.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Despite the Big 12's reputation, Baker Mayfield faced stiffer competition than either Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen last year. The adjusted defensive QBR of Mayfield's opponents, weighted by his number of action plays against them, was 44.8 last season. By the same method, Darnold's and Rosen's opponents' defensive QBR were 47.4 and 50.9, respectively. The lower the defensive QBR, the better the defense is at stopping opposing quarterbacks.
