The Panthers used both power and zone run schemes tonight with rookie Christian McCaffrey. We saw the old school counter from a shotgun alignment, inside zone and the stretch schemes that cater to McCaffrey's speed and cutback ability. Given the matchups he will create as a receiver in a regular season game plan, McCaffrey's ability to produce in the Panthers core run schemes adds even more fantasy value this season.

End-of-season slate will test Stanford

Stanford faces an early challenge on the road vs. rival USC, but the tougher stretch comes later against Washington, Washington State and Cal in the Big Game.

Kyle Bonagura ESPN Staff Writer

Stanford has been the model of consistency in the Pac-12 for close to a decade and now, after a somewhat disappointing 10-win season, the Cardinal starts the year at No. 14 in the preseason coach poll.

Biggest position battles: Stanford

Despite losing some top picks to the NFL, Stanford has very few major holes to fill. It will be interesting to see if any youngsters can work their way into the rotation on the O-line.

Biggest August storyline for No. 16 Stanford

All eyes will be on quarterback Keller Chryst, who had surgery on his right knee. At least backup Ryan Burns didn't leave via the graduate transfer rules as was expected.

Stanford DT Harrison Phillips has watched last year's loss to Washington at least 30 times. "I don't even know what happened that game, honestly. That's what everyone says but I actually don't know."

Stanford running back Bryce Love is looking forward to being in Australia when the Cardinal opens the season against Rice, but not necessarily the journey to get there. The idea of flying that far over an ocean is something that just doesn't appeal to him and when asked what he's looking forward to most about the trip one word quickly came to mind: "Landing."

Stanford was picked to come in second in the Pac-12 North in the preseason media poll. The Cardinal received one first-place vote behind heavy favorite Washington.

Which college football conference is No. 1 for 2017?

After a (sort of) down year, the SEC is loaded again in 2017. But the ACC and Big Ten are right there, and the Pac-12 and Big 12 aren't far off. So which league enters 2017 as the deepest in the country?
