How injuries to Desmond, Kipnis change the fantasy landscape

Ian Desmond was poised to be a fantasy star for the Rockies this season, but an injury could hold him out of action. Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Bad things tend to happen when a pitched ball connects with a batter’s hand, and so it is that Colorado Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond is likely to miss considerable time with a fracture -- in which the severity and timetable for return remain problematic. That’s the unfortunate big story from the weekend in fantasy. I had been recommending Desmond this offseason, even if his signing by the Rockies seemed rather odd and implausible. Why play a fellow capable of handling shortstop and center field at first base? Well, it’s mildly irrelevant in fantasy, where we simply want big offensive numbers. Desmond remains capable of supplying them, but not in April and who knows about May.
